Nova magazine – legendary covers from the 1960s
Nova was a groundbreaking women's monthly published by Newnes/IPC from March 1965 to October 1975. The launch
editor was Harry Fieldhouse.
Dennis Hackett took over after six months, having been editor at Jocelyn Stevens'
Queen. Such was
Nova's reputation that IPC tried to revive the title in 2000, but it did not last.
The first designer was Harri Peccinotti, who carried on as a freelance photographer. Peter Crookston from the
Sunday Times Magazine later took over with David Hillman joining as art director. Editors:
- Harry Fieldhouse (Mar-Aug 65);
- Dennis Hackett (Sep 65-Dec 67);
- Bill Smithies (Jan-Jun 68);
- Dennis Hackett (Jul 68-Apr 69);
- Peter Crookston (May/Jun 69- Nov 70);
- Gillian Cooke (Dec 70- Oct 75).
The book
Nova 1965-1975, compiled by David Hillman and Harri Peccinotti, and edited by David Gibbs, was published by Pavilion Books in 1993. It was republished by Batsford in 2019 as
Nova 1965-1975: The style bible of the 60s and 70s.
